Easter just doesn’t get the same attention as Christmas. We don’t put up Easter lights or an Easter tree or get Easter presents. There aren’t Easter carols or Easter movies like “How the Grinch Ruined Easter.” And most people don’t even notice Good Friday! True there is the Easter Bunny hiding candy eggs, but it’s only is for a day. Christmas lasts for months!
Yet Good Friday and Easter are the whole point of Christmas! Jesus was born to die. His death and resurrection are the one-two punch that changed human history. Jesus didn’t come to earth simply to be a good example or an inspiration. He came to die in our place to pay the penalty of our sin. Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection opened wide the door to a personal relationship with God. Galatians 4:4-6 says, “But when the time arrived that was set by God the Father, God sent his Son, born among us of a woman, born under the conditions of the law so that he might redeem those of us who have been kidnapped by the law. Thus we have been set free to experience our rightful heritage.
You can tell for sure that you are now fully adopted as his own children because God sent the Spirit of his Son into our lives.” (The Message) This could well be your most memorable Easter season ever. Why not make it memorable for a different reason? Read the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection this weekend in John 18-20. You will find a story filled with: betrayals, swordplay, an unjust trial, unimaginable violence, prophecy, courage, amazing devotion, angels, and miracles. Then ask yourself, “What difference does this story make in my life?” I can only say it radically changed mine forever!
